New Setblock command

Jeb recently said the following:

That you even could replace blocks using /summon was a surprise to me, and relies to a quirky behavior of falling sand. I do not recommend basing contraptions on this, because it's very fragile and may change if we ever need to do something new with falling sand.

The syntax for the command is:

/setblock x y z block data method dataTag

x y z are coordinates, can be relative using tilde, as usual

block is the block id (ofcourse), which in the future will be mod-safe (for example, instead of having the value 1, you can have "minecraft:stone")

data is the block data, 0-15 as normal

method is special and can have three values: replace, keep, destroy. "replace" will simply replace the current block, and throw an error message if nothing happened (occurs when the new block/data is identical to the old one). "keep" will only place the new block if the target space is empty, and "destroy" will first destroy the target block (and spawn resources) before placing the new block.

dataTag is the NBT tag were you put information for tile entities such as chests. For example,
"{Items:[{id:"minecraft:potato",Count:2}]}", and so on.

Notch Loves Mojang

Notch Loves Mojang

Notch, the creator of minecraft, has earned close to $3,000,000 in dividends for the shares he owns in Mojang. Intead of keeping the money for himself, he has split the money between his 25 mojang employees. This means they each went home $125,000 richer.

Hats of to Notch for such a generous act!

World Height Increased

Minecraft 1.2 will introduce a new world format called Anvil. It brings a list of changes and improvements over the previous file format, Region. It is currently implemented in Snapshots 12w07a and 12w07b.

Maximum build height has been increased to 256 (was 128).

Empty sections of the world are not loaded into memory.

Block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256).

Block ordering have been changed from x/z/y to y/z/x in order to improve compression.

Packets for sending chunks have been updated (a full 128-high chunk is smaller than the old format, and a chunk with lots of empty space is much smaller).

Biomes are saved per x/z column, which means they can be altered by tools.

Bottle o' Enchanting

The Bottle o' Enchanting is an item added in weekly snapshot 12w04a. It appears to be a potion, but works very differently and cannot be brewed. It is only available via spawning in Creative mode.

The item itself gives off a glowing animation, much like normal Potions.

It works like a Splash Potion, as they are throwable and can be dispensed. On Impact, blue swirls sprites along with 1 to 3 Experience Orbs, containing 3 to 11 experience points total, will appear.

The Bottle o' Enchanting's main use would be to give experience without using server commands.

Throwing the Bottle o' Enchanting at a mob has no effect against the mob.

The Bottle o' Enchanting can also be used for player made dungeons by shooting them out of a dispenser as a reward for the player(s).

Fire Charge

When used by a player, it instantly places Fire at the clicked location, like a Flint and Steel; however, it has only one use and so is not practical for that purpose. Fire charges also burn faster than a Flint and Steel. You get three from each one crafted.

When a Fire Charge is dispensed from a Dispenser, it acts like a Blaze fireball, flying in a straight line (though with the usual random aim of a Dispenser). When it hits a block, it will place Fire at that location. Contrary to many claims, these fireballs have no explosive effect.

Fire charge can also be used to light a Nether Portal.

Ocelot and Cats

Ocelot and Cats

When untamed, these felines have yellow fur with brown spots, a grey-black nose, and green eyes. Once tamed, their skin will change to either tabby. (most common), tuxedo, or siamese.

The Ocelot is a mainly passive, shy mob which will not attack the player. Should the player move or look too abruptly near one, it will sprint away. Ocelots are the first mob with the ability to sprint, as well. If enclosed and unable to escape, they will stand still until an exit is made, after which they will quickly sprint through it. Wild Ocelots will occasionally slowly sneak up on chickens, then proceed to pounce and kill. However, their behavior when taming takes priority over this behavior.

To tame an Ocelot, the player must be holding Raw Fish while standing perfectly still and not looking around too quickly. It will slowly approach the player, and while in this state, using Raw Fish on it will tame it, changing it to one of the three tame cat types. This will also end its shy behavior. It will now follow the play

Adventure Update News

Pre releases and Adventure Updates

The adventure update is going great! We’re adding features and cramming in content, and then started feature creeping and content creeping. What we’ve got on our hands now is somewhere in between a finished Adventure Mode update and a version of the game we’d be proud to call just “Minecraft”. Not “Minecraft Beta” or “Minecraft Alpha”, but just plain and simple “Minecraft”.

And we’re going to release that version of the game live on stage in Vegas at MineCon! Woooo!

Up until then, instead of trying to squeeze in another real release, we’re going to do weekly (or so) pre releases, aimed at advanced players. We release these via twitter, so make sure to follow me (@notch) and Jens (@jeb_) if you’re interested in those.

Also, we’re finally adding a dragon.
